A kondensatbeholder, or condensate drain pan, is a component found in many HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems and refrigeration units. Its primary function is to collect and safely dispose of condensation that forms as a byproduct of the cooling process. When air passes over a cold evaporator coil, moisture in the air condenses onto the coil's surface, much like water droplets forming on a cold glass. This water then drips off and needs to be managed.

The kondensatbeholder is typically located beneath the evaporator coil, acting as a collection basin. It is usually made of plastic or metal and is designed to be corrosion-resistant. From the beholder, a condensate drain line, often a PVC pipe, carries the collected water away from the unit. This drain line typically leads to a floor drain, a condensate pump, or sometimes outside the building, depending on the system's design and location.

A properly functioning kondensatbeholder and drain line are crucial for preventing water damage to the HVAC unit itself, the surrounding structure, and for inhibiting mold and mildew growth. If the beholder or drain line becomes clogged with debris, algae, or sludge, water can back up, potentially overflowing the beholder and causing significant water damage. Many systems include a safety float switch that can shut down the unit if the water level in the beholder rises too high, preventing a catastrophic overflow. Regular inspection and cleaning of the kondensatbeholder and drain line are recommended maintenance practices.
