Kompulsywne is a Polish adjective used to describe tendencies toward compulsive actions or thoughts. In psychology and psychiatry, the term is commonly applied to describe phenomena related to compulsion, especially in connection with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It appears in phrases such as zachowania kompulsynowe (compulsive behaviors) i myśli kompulsywne (compulsive thoughts).

Kompulsywne zachowania are repeated actions performed in response to an obsession or according to internal rules that must be followed rigidly. Their aim is usually to reduce distress or prevent a feared outcome, but the relief they provide is temporary. These behaviors can dominate a person’s time and interfere with daily functioning. Compulsions are distinguished from ordinary habits by their involuntary feel, excessive frequency, and the significant distress or impairment they cause.

Obsesje and kompulsywne zachowania are the core components of OCD, though compulsive phenomena can appear in other anxiety-related or impulse-control disorders. Common examples include excessive handwashing, repeatedly checking things, ordering or counting, and performing actions in a ritualized manner. Some individuals experience kompulsywne thoughts without overt behaviors, while others alternate between mental rituals and physical actions.

Treatment typically involves psychotherapy, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy with exposure and response prevention (ERP), and/or pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The prognosis varies; with appropriate treatment, many individuals experience reduced symptom severity and improved functioning. The term kompulsywne is also used descriptively for personality traits or behaviors that may be normative in some contexts but become problematic when excessive or distressing.
