Browns include items like dry leaves, straw, and shredded paper, which provide energy for the microorganisms. Greens, such as vegetable scraps, grass clippings, and coffee grounds, supply the nitrogen needed for microbial growth and reproduction. Adequate moisture is crucial for microbial activity, and the compost pile should be kept damp but not waterlogged. Aeration, or the supply of oxygen, is also essential to prevent anaerobic conditions, which can lead to foul odors and slow down decomposition.

Composting can occur in various environments, from backyard compost bins to large-scale industrial facilities. The rate of decomposition depends on factors like the composition of the organic matter, temperature, moisture levels, and aeration.
