A kompositmatris, often translated as composite matrix or composite material matrix, refers to the binder substance within a composite material that encloses and holds the reinforcing fibers or particles together. This matrix plays a crucial role in the overall properties of the composite, influencing its strength, stiffness, toughness, temperature resistance, and environmental durability.

The matrix material is typically a polymer, metal, or ceramic. Polymer matrices, such as epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester resins, are common in fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) due to their good mechanical properties, ease of processing, and cost-effectiveness. Metal matrices, found in metal matrix composites (MMCs), can offer superior stiffness, strength at elevated temperatures, and electrical conductivity compared to polymers. Ceramic matrices, used in ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), provide exceptional high-temperature resistance and wear resistance, making them suitable for demanding aerospace and industrial applications.

The matrix binds the reinforcement, transfers stress to it, and protects it from environmental damage and abrasion. Its properties are carefully selected to complement those of the reinforcement, creating a synergistic effect that results in a material with superior performance characteristics than either component alone. The interface between the matrix and the reinforcement is also a critical factor in determining the composite's performance.
