Komposiittiä, or composite materials, are materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties which remain separate and distinct at the macroscopic or microscopic level within the finished structure. The goal is to create a material with characteristics that are different from the individual components. Typically, one material is the matrix, which surrounds and binds the reinforcement material.

The reinforcement is usually in the form of fibers, particles, or flakes, and it provides the strength and stiffness. Common reinforcing materials include carbon fibers, glass fibers, and aramid fibers. The matrix material holds the reinforcement in place and transfers loads to it. Polymers, metals, and ceramics can all be used as matrix materials.

Composite materials offer several advantages over traditional materials. They are often lightweight yet strong, have high stiffness, and can be designed for specific applications. Their resistance to corrosion and fatigue can also be superior. These properties make them ideal for use in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, marine, and sporting goods. For example, carbon fiber composites are used in aircraft structures and high-performance vehicles, while fiberglass composites are common in boat hulls and wind turbine blades. The ability to tailor the properties of composites by selecting different combinations of matrix and reinforcement materials makes them a versatile and increasingly important class of engineering materials.
