Komplementtiväreihin, often translated as complementary colors, are pairs of colors which, when combined or mixed, cancel each other out (lose hue) by producing a grayscale color like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those particular two colors. For this reason, these particular pairs of colors are sometimes referred to as "contrasting colors".

The concept of complementary colors is most commonly applied in color theory, particularly in art and design. The most well-known complementary color pairs are derived from the traditional RYB color model, which includes red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and purple. In this model, each primary color is paired with the secondary color formed by mixing the other two primary colors.

In the additive color model (RGB), used for light, the complementary pairs are slightly different. Here, red's complement is cyan (a mix of blue and green), green's complement is magenta (a mix of red and blue), and blue's complement is yellow (a mix of red and green). In the subtractive color model (CMY/CMYK), used for pigments and printing, the complementary pairs align with the RGB model: cyan and red, magenta and green, and yellow and blue.

Understanding complementary colors is crucial for artists and designers when choosing color palettes. Placing complementary colors next to each other can make both colors appear more vibrant and intense. Conversely, mixing complementary colors in equal proportions will neutralize them, resulting in a shade of gray or black. This principle is used to create visual interest, harmony, or to achieve specific aesthetic effects.
