Kolposkopi is a medical procedure used to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva. It employs a colposcope, a specialized magnifying instrument that allows a healthcare provider to view these areas in greater detail than a standard visual inspection. The colposcope is not inserted into the body but is used externally.

During a kolposkopi, the patient is positioned similarly to a pelvic exam. After insertion of a speculum to visualize the cervix, the colposcope is brought close to the vulva. The healthcare provider may apply a dilute acetic acid solution to the cervix, which causes abnormal cells to turn white, making them more apparent. A Lugol's iodine solution may also be used, though abnormal cells do not absorb iodine and remain unstained.

Kolposkopi is primarily performed to investigate abnormal results from a Pap smear or HPV test. It helps to identify precancerous or cancerous changes in the cells of the cervix, as well as other conditions such as inflammation or infections. If suspicious areas are observed, the provider may perform a biopsy, taking a small sample of tissue for laboratory analysis. This diagnostic procedure is generally well-tolerated and is an important tool in the early detection and management of gynecological conditions.
