Kolonialmakt (kolonialmakt) is a term used to describe a nation that maintains colonies abroad and exercises political control and economic dominance over non-metropolitan territories. It refers to states that built and sustained overseas empires through varying systems of governance, economic extraction, and cultural influence.

Historically, colonial powers emerged from the age of exploration and expanded during the era of “old imperialism” (15th–18th centuries) and the “new imperialism” of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Colonial rule took multiple forms, including direct rule by metropolitan administrations, protectorates, and economic concessions. Colonies often provided raw materials, markets, strategic advantages, and labor, while colonial authorities introduced legal systems, infrastructure, and education, frequently alongside coercive practices and suppression of local political autonomy.

Notable colonial powers include Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Belgium, with Germany and Italy also establishing colonies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The United States pursued overseas influence and territorial acquisitions in the Caribbean and Pacific, and controlled territories such as the Philippines in the early 20th century.
