Kolmoisrajoja, or triple junctions, are points in the Earth's lithosphere where three tectonic plates meet. The Finnish term kolmoisrajoja is used in geological literature to refer to these junctions. At such points, the relative motions of the three adjacent plates influence patterns of seafloor spreading, subduction initiation, and faulting in the surrounding region.

Triple junctions are classified by the types of plate boundaries that converge around them. Boundaries can be divergent (ridges), convergent (subduction zones), or transform (strike-slip faults). The possible configurations correspond to different combinations of these boundary types, and their stability depends on plate motions and stress balance. Some configurations are persistent for long periods, while others migrate, reorganize, or disappear as plates move.

Most kolmoisrajoja lie beneath the oceans, where mid-ocean ridges intersect transform faults or subduction zones. Continental triple junctions occur where rifts or tectonic boundaries intersect within a landmass; the Afar Triangle in East Africa is a well-known example, where the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and East African Rift meet in a tectonically active region.

Studying kolmoisrajoja helps scientists understand the mechanisms of plate tectonics, mantle flow, and regional geodynamics. Researchers use seafloor mapping, paleomagnetic data, GPS, and seismic observations to reconstruct past junction configurations and to assess ongoing tectonic activity, volcanism, and earthquake potential associated with these junctions.
