Kolmivaihevirta, also known as three-phase electric power, is a type of alternating current electrical system that uses three conductors. Each conductor carries an alternating current that is offset in phase from the currents in the other two conductors by one-third of a cycle, or 120 degrees. This phase difference is crucial for the efficient generation, transmission, and use of electrical energy.

The primary advantage of kolmivaihevirta over single-phase systems lies in its ability to deliver more power with the same amount of conductor material. This efficiency makes it the standard for power generation and distribution networks worldwide, especially for industrial and commercial applications. Three-phase power is ideal for running electric motors, as the alternating magnetic fields created by the three phases naturally produce a rotating magnetic field. This rotating field allows for simpler and more robust motor designs that do not require starting capacitors or windings, unlike many single-phase motors.

In a three-phase system, power can be delivered in either a wye (Y) or delta (Δ) configuration. A wye configuration has a neutral point, which can be grounded or left floating, and allows for two different voltage levels to be accessed. A delta configuration does not have a neutral point. The generation of three-phase power typically occurs at large power plants using generators with three sets of windings. The electricity is then transmitted over long distances at high voltages to minimize power loss and subsequently stepped down to lower voltages for distribution to consumers. Most households receive single-phase power, derived from one of the phases of the three-phase grid.
