Kolloidlahuste, also known as colloidal solutions or colloidal dispersions, are mixtures where one substance of microscopically dispersed insoluble particles is suspended throughout another substance. The dispersed-phase particles have sizes ranging from approximately 1 nanometer to 1 micrometer. These particles are larger than molecules but too small to be seen with the naked eye.

Unlike true solutions, where the solute particles are molecularly dispersed and indistinguishable from the solvent, colloidal particles remain dispersed due to their small size and random motion, often influenced by Brownian motion. They do not settle out of the dispersing medium over time, which distinguishes them from suspensions, where larger particles will eventually precipitate.

A key characteristic of kolloidlahuste is the Tyndall effect, where a beam of light passing through the dispersion becomes visible because the colloidal particles scatter the light. This phenomenon is not observed in true solutions. Examples of kolloidlahuste are abundant in nature and industry. Milk is a common example, where fat globules and protein molecules are dispersed in water. Fog and smoke are atmospheric kolloidlahuste. Many paints, gels, and emulsions are also colloidal dispersions. The properties and stability of kolloidlahuste depend on factors such as particle size, charge, and the nature of the dispersing medium. They are crucial in various biological processes and industrial applications.
