kloakgas
Kloakgas, a Dutch term, refers to gases produced by the decomposition of organic matter in sewer systems, drains, and wastewater facilities. The gas is a mixture of several compounds, most notably hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and ammonia (NH3), with traces of other volatile compounds. It forms under anaerobic conditions when bacteria break down waste in wet, oxygen-poor environments. The mixture is typically colorless and may be flammable; hydrogen sulfide is the component of greatest hazard due to its toxicity and corrosive action on the lungs. At low concentrations it may emit a characteristic rotten-egg odor, but olfactory fatigue can occur, making odor an unreliable warning at higher exposures.
Health and safety: The gases can pose serious health risks, especially in confined spaces. Hydrogen sulfide
