Kliimateadustest, also known as climate engineering or geoengineering, refers to deliberate large-scale interventions in Earth’s climate system to counteract global warming and mitigate the effects of climate change. These techniques aim to either reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the planet’s surface or enhance the planet’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. While the concept has been discussed for decades, it has gained renewed attention as efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have proven insufficient to prevent significant climate impacts.

One prominent approach is solar radiation management (SRM), which involves reflecting a portion of incoming solar energy back into space. Methods include injecting reflective particles, such as sulfur aerosols, into the stratosphere to mimic the cooling effect of volcanic eruptions, or deploying large-scale mirrors or cloud brightening techniques in the troposphere. Another strategy is carbon dioxide removal (CDR), which focuses on capturing and storing atmospheric CO₂ through natural or artificial processes, such as enhanced weathering, direct air capture, or bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).

Proponents argue that climate engineering could provide a temporary or supplementary solution to reduce temperature rises while emissions reductions are implemented. However, critics highlight significant uncertainties and risks, including potential disruptions to weather patterns, uneven regional effects, and unintended ecological consequences. Additionally, some techniques may only address symptoms rather than root causes of climate change, and their long-term impacts on ecosystems and human societies remain poorly understood.

Ethical concerns also arise, particularly regarding governance, equity, and the potential for misuse. Since climate engineering could have global consequences, international cooperation and regulation would be essential to prevent unilateral actions that might exacerbate climate disparities. Research into these technologies remains ongoing, with many approaches still in theoretical or experimental stages. The debate continues over whether climate engineering should be pursued as a last-resort measure or avoided due to its risks and ethical dilemmas.
