Klasifikim, or classification, is the process of organizing items into groups based on shared characteristics to facilitate understanding, communication, and analysis. It is used across disciplines to bring order to complexity, support retrieval, and enable comparisons. Classifications can be hierarchical, polyhierarchical, or flat, depending on the criteria and context.

Etymology and usage: the term derives from Latin classificare, meaning to arrange into classes. In Albanian, the word is klasifikim, reflecting its broad linguistic usage in science, information management, and everyday language.

Applications span several fields. In biology, taxonomy categorizes living organisms into ranks such as domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. In data science and information systems, classification assigns predefined labels to instances, enabling tasks like spam filtering, image tagging, and medical diagnosis. Library and information science rely on classification systems (for example, Dewey Decimal or Library of Congress) to organize resources. Medicine uses disease classification schemes (like the ICD) to standardize reporting and research. Linguistics and anthropology classify languages and cultures by typological features or cultural traits.

Techniques and types: classification methods include rule-based systems, probabilistic or statistical classifiers, and machine learning models such as decision trees, logistic regression, support vector machines, and neural networks. Unsupervised clustering is related but does not produce predefined labels in the same sense as supervised classification.
