Kjølesløyfer, or cooling loops, are essential components in many thermal management systems. They facilitate the transfer of heat away from a source, such as a computer processor or an industrial machine, to a location where it can be dissipated. The fundamental principle involves a fluid circulating through a closed or open system.

In a typical closed-loop system, a pump circulates a coolant, often water or a specialized fluid, from a heat source (like a CPU block) to a radiator. The radiator then releases the heat into the surrounding environment, usually with the aid of fans. The cooled fluid then returns to the heat source to repeat the cycle. This continuous circulation is what defines the "loop."

Open-loop systems, while less common in consumer electronics, are employed in certain industrial applications. In these, the coolant may not be fully contained and might be replenished or partially exchanged with a cooler external source.
