Kirkkoslaavi, Finnish for Church Slavonic, is the historic liturgical language used by several Slavic Christian churches. It is the traditional written and liturgical form of the Slavic liturgical languages, derived from Old Church Slavonic and closely associated with the missionary work of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the 9th century. Kirkkoslaavi arose to translate the Christian rites and scriptures for Slavic peoples and to standardize worship across diverse Slavic communities.

The development of kirkkoslaavi led to a number of regional traditions. The East Slavic tradition produced what is commonly called Russian Church Slavonic, while the South Slavic tradition gave Bulgarian and Macedonian Church Slavonic, with Serbo-Croatian and Ukrainian variants developing in their respective areas. Historically, texts were written in both Glagolitic and, later, Cyrillic scripts; Glagolitic usage was especially prominent in Croatia, where it persisted for liturgical and literary purposes longer than in other regions.

Today kirkkoslaavi remains in liturgical use in several Orthodox churches, including the Russian, Bulgarian, and Serbian Orthodox Churches, as well as in some Eastern Catholic communities. It is studied as a classical or liturgical language in seminaries and universities, and is employed in traditional chant, hymns, and ceremonial readings. In many churches, vernacular languages have become the norm for regular services, but kirkkoslaavi continues to hold an important canonical and cultural role in liturgical and scholarly contexts.

Linguistically, kirkkoslaavi preserves many archaic features of early Slavic, with a rich inflectional system and a specialized religious lexicon. Its study provides insight into the development of Cyrillic script, Slavic philology, and the historical spread of Christianity in Eastern Europe.
