Kirkemusikken, literally “church music” in Norwegian, refers to the traditions, practices and repertoire of music performed within Christian worship services in Norway. The term encompasses a wide range of musical styles, from plainchant and hymn singing to contemporary praise and worship, and it is practiced in both Catholic and Protestant churches as well as in other Christian denominations.

The use of music in Norwegian churches can be traced back to the medieval period when Latin chants and the early hymnody of the Lutheran Reformation began to shape worship. In the 19th century, the rise of church choirs, organ playing, and the publication of hymnals such as “Norske Sangsamlinger” reflected a growing interest in liturgical music. The 20th century brought further diversification, with composers like Olav Anton Moe and Odd Winger writing settings for the Norwegian language, and the introduction of contemporary worship songs in the 1970s and 1980s.

In contemporary Norwegian churches, kirkemusikken is often organized by a music director or lead singer and may involve organists, choirs, vocal soloists, and instrumentalists playing pianos, trumpets or drums. Hymnals remain the core of liturgical repertoire, while many churches also use modern worship albums to engage congregations.
