Kirjonta, or embroidery, is the art of decorating fabric with needle and thread or yarn. The term encompasses a broad range of techniques, including counted thread work, drawn thread work, and surface stitches, and is used on clothing, household textiles, and decorative pieces. In Finnish, kirjonta refers to the craft of embroidery, and kirjonnat—the plural form—denotes multiple embroidery works.

Techniques include cross-stitch, satin stitch, backstitch, chain stitch, and pulled-thread work. Essential tools include needles designed for embroidery, embroidery floss or silk, fabrics such as linen or cotton, and frames or hoops to hold the fabric.

Embroidery has ancient origins in many cultures. In Finnish tradition, the craft has been part of folk costumes and domestic textiles, with motifs drawn from nature and daily life. Contemporary embroidery in Finland combines traditional motifs with modern design.
