Kipufogógáz-kezelés, often translated as exhaust gas treatment or exhaust gas aftertreatment, refers to the systems and technologies used to reduce the harmful emissions produced by internal combustion engines. These systems are crucial for meeting environmental regulations and improving air quality. The primary goal is to convert toxic pollutants present in the exhaust gas into less harmful substances before they are released into the atmosphere.

Key components of exhaust gas treatment systems vary depending on the engine type (petrol or diesel) and the specific pollutants targeted. For petrol engines, catalytic converters are a standard feature. These devices use precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium to chemically transform carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and nitrogen (N2).

Diesel engines typically require more complex aftertreatment systems due to their higher particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions. Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are designed to trap soot particles. These filters are periodically regenerated, either passively through high exhaust temperatures or actively by injecting additional fuel to burn off the trapped soot. To further reduce NOx emissions in diesel engines, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems are employed. SCR systems inject a urea-based solution (AdBlue) into the exhaust stream, which reacts with NOx in a catalyst to produce nitrogen and water. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is another common technology that recirculates a portion of the exhaust gas back into the engine's intake to lower combustion temperatures and reduce NOx formation.
