Keuhkoahtauma, also known as pulmonary congestion, refers to an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the lungs. This condition can arise from various underlying causes, primarily related to the heart or lungs themselves. When the heart's pumping action is weakened, such as in heart failure, blood can back up into the pulmonary veins, leading to increased pressure within the lung capillaries and subsequent leakage of fluid into the lung tissue and air sacs.

Lung-related conditions that can cause keuhkoahtauma include pneumonia, where inflammation causes fluid buildup in the alveoli, or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a severe lung injury that results in widespread inflammation and fluid accumulation. Other contributing factors can include kidney failure, where the body struggles to remove excess fluid, or certain medications that can cause fluid retention.

Symptoms of keuhkoahtauma often include shortness of breath, particularly when lying down (orthopnea), a cough that may produce frothy or pink-tinged sputum, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. In more severe cases, individuals may experience rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and cyanosis (a bluish discoloration of the skin due to lack of oxygen). Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, chest X-ray, and potentially other imaging or laboratory tests to identify the underlying cause. Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause, managing fluid overload, and improving oxygenation.
