The implement consists of multiple concave metal discs mounted on a frame. These discs rotate as the implement is pulled across the field, cutting into the soil and throwing it aside.

The discs are typically arranged in two gangs, with the front gang angled to cut into the soil and the rear gang angled in the opposite direction to further break up and level the soil. The angle of the disc gangs can often be adjusted to control the depth and intensity of the cultivation.
