The kestävyysraportointidirektiivi, often referred to by its English acronym CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), is a European Union directive that aims to enhance corporate sustainability reporting. It entered into force in January 2023 and is being phased in over several years. The CSRD significantly expands the scope and detail of sustainability information that companies operating within the EU must disclose.

Its primary objective is to make corporate sustainability reporting more standardized, comparable, and reliable. This increased transparency is intended to help investors, consumers, and other stakeholders make more informed decisions. The directive mandates that companies report on a wide range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters, aligning with the EU's sustainability goals and the European Green Deal.

The CSRD builds upon previous sustainability reporting requirements, such as the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), by broadening its coverage to include more companies and requiring more detailed disclosures. It introduces mandatory European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) developed by EFRAG (European Financial Reporting Advisory Group) which will provide a common framework for reporting. Companies will need to report according to these standards, ensuring a consistent approach across the EU. The directive also emphasizes the importance of digital tagging of reported sustainability information, making it more accessible and machine-readable. This move towards digital reporting is expected to improve data quality and facilitate analysis.
