Kestävyyskehitys, often translated as sustainable development, refers to development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is a multidimensional concept that integrates environmental, social, and economic considerations. The aim is to achieve a balance between these three pillars to ensure long-term well-being for both people and the planet.

The environmental dimension focuses on protecting natural resources, preserving biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. This involves practices such as reducing pollution, conserving energy, and promoting the use of renewable resources. The social dimension emphasizes equity, human rights, and social justice. It includes ensuring access to education, healthcare, and decent living conditions for all, as well as promoting cultural diversity and community cohesion. The economic dimension seeks to foster prosperity and economic growth in a way that is inclusive and environmentally responsible. This entails creating jobs, promoting innovation, and ensuring fair trade practices.

The concept gained international prominence with the publication of the Brundtland Report in 1987, titled "Our Common Future." Since then, it has become a guiding principle for international policy and national strategies worldwide. Various frameworks, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), provide a roadmap for achieving kestävyyskehitys by 2030. These goals cover a broad range of issues, from poverty and hunger to climate action and responsible consumption. Achieving kestävyyskehitys requires a collective effort from governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals.
