Keskusnäön is a term used in the field of optometry and ophthalmology to describe a condition where the visual axis of the eye is aligned with the center of the retina, rather than the fovea, which is the area of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. This misalignment can occur due to various factors, including developmental issues, eye muscle imbalances, or previous eye surgeries.

In a typical eye, the fovea is located slightly nasal (toward the nose) to the center of the retina. When the visual axis is aligned with the fovea, the person has normal central vision. However, when the visual axis is aligned with the center of the retina, the person may experience a condition known as esotropia or exotropia, where the eyes may turn inward or outward, respectively. This can lead to symptoms such as double vision, eye strain, and headaches.

Keskusnäön can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination, which may include visual acuity tests, refraction tests, and binocular vision tests. Treatment options depend on the underlying cause and may include vision therapy, prisms, or, in some cases, surgery to realign the eyes. Early intervention can help prevent the development of amblyopia, a condition where the brain fails to properly process visual information from one or both eyes, leading to poor vision in the affected eye(s).
