It occurs during actions such as system calls, hardware interrupts, and other asynchronous events. The kernel context is distinct from user-space execution, where code runs with limited privileges and without direct access to kernel data structures.

There are two common kernel contexts. Process context describes code that executes on behalf of a user process or a kernel thread; in this context the code can sleep, block, and participate in regular scheduling. Interrupt context arises when a hardware interrupt is handled; in this context the kernel typically cannot sleep and preemption is restricted or disabled, so long-running work must be deferred to other mechanisms such as soft interrupts, tasklets, or work queues.

To support multiple concurrent operations, kernels maintain per-CPU state for the kernel context, including registers, stack pointers, and, in many designs, a separate kernel stack. When a context switch occurs, the CPU saves the current context and restores the next one, and address-space handling ensures the correct mapping for user or kernel memory as appropriate.

Programming for kernel context requires careful synchronization and discipline. Access to shared data structures is protected with locks or atomic operations. In interrupt context, blocking operations are avoided; developers use spinlocks and defer work to asynchronous handlers. Allocation and I/O in kernel context follow rules about blocking: some operations are allowed in process context but not in hard interrupt context.

Understanding kernelkontext is essential for analyzing performance, latency, and correctness in an operating system, since context switches and proper synchronization directly impact stability and throughput.
