keramsit

Keramsit, also spelled keramzit or keramsite, is a lightweight expanded clay aggregate used in construction and horticulture. It consists of small, inert ceramic granules produced by firing natural clays in a kiln. The high temperatures cause minerals in the clay to release gases, forming numerous hollow, porous spheres. After cooling, the material is graded by particle size for different applications.

Production and characteristics

Keramsit is made from natural clay and other raw materials, which are formed into grains and fired in a rotary kiln. The resulting expanded clay spheres have low density and a highly porous structure. The aggregate is chemically inert and non-toxic, providing stability and durability in various environments. Depending on the grade, keramsit can offer good thermal and acoustic insulation, drainage, and moderate mechanical strength.

Applications

In construction, keramsit is used as a lightweight aggregate in concrete and plaster, producing lighter-weight concretes with improved insulation properties. It is employed in insulating concretes, screeds, and roofing or facade systems where reduced weight and enhanced thermal performance are advantageous. Keramsit also serves as a drainage layer in foundations, green roofs, and landscaping projects. In horticulture, it is used as a growing medium or soil amendment to improve aeration, drainage, and moisture retention.
