Common formats are WAV or FLAC for archival quality, with MP3 or other formats for distribution. Recording decisions consider microphone placement, distance to sources, and the intended use, as well as ethical and legal considerations.

Historically, field recording developed through ethnography, linguistics, and natural sound study in the 20th century, with figures such as ethnomusicologists and soundscape researchers expanding its scope. The practice has grown with digital technology, enabling longer and higher-fidelity recordings, complex soundscapes, and immersive formats.

Applications span ethnomusicology, linguistics, anthropology, environmental and acoustic ecology, journalism, film, and sound design. Field recordings serve both scientific documentation and artistic exploration, providing archival material for future research and re-contextualization for contemporary audiences.
