Kenttäviivojen, often translated as "field lines" or "lines of force," is a concept used in physics, particularly in electromagnetism and other fields involving fields. These lines are a visual representation of a force field, such as an electric field or a magnetic field. They are not physical entities but rather a pedagogical tool to illustrate the direction and strength of the field at different points in space.

Field lines originate from positive charges and terminate on negative charges in the case of electric fields. For magnetic fields, they are considered to form closed loops, emerging from the north pole of a magnet and entering the south pole. The density of field lines in a particular region is proportional to the magnitude of the field strength. Where the lines are close together, the field is strong; where they are farther apart, the field is weak.

The direction of a field line at any point indicates the direction of the force that would be exerted on a positive test charge placed at that point in an electric field, or the direction of the north pole of a compass needle in a magnetic field. Field lines never intersect, as this would imply that the field has more than one direction at a single point, which is physically impossible for a static field. The concept of field lines helps in understanding the behavior of charges and magnets and the forces they exert on each other.
