Kenttävaikutteiset, often translated as field-effect, refers to a phenomenon in physics and electronics where an electric field influences the electrical conductivity of a material. This principle is fundamental to the operation of many electronic devices, most notably field-effect transistors (FETs). In a FET, an electric field, typically generated by a voltage applied to a gate electrode, controls the flow of charge carriers (electrons or holes) through a semiconductor channel. This control mechanism allows the transistor to act as a switch or an amplifier.

The term "field-effect" highlights the non-contact nature of the control mechanism. Unlike devices that rely on current flowing through a control element, field-effect devices utilize an electrostatic force. This characteristic leads to high input impedance, meaning they draw very little current from the signal being controlled. This makes them particularly useful in applications where signal integrity is crucial.

Different types of field-effect devices exist, with MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) being the most common. Other types include JFETs (Junction Field-Effect Transistors) and MESFETs (Metal-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors). The underlying principle, however, remains the manipulation of charge carriers in a semiconductor channel by an external electric field. The ability to precisely control current flow with minimal power consumption has made field-effect devices indispensable in modern electronics, powering everything from microprocessors to communication systems.
