Kehitysliuokseen, often translated as "developing solution" or "developer," is a crucial chemical bath used in photographic processing. Its primary function is to convert the latent image, invisible to the naked eye but formed by the exposure of light on photographic film or paper, into a visible image. This conversion process, known as development, is achieved through a chemical reaction.

In traditional black-and-white photography, the developing solution typically contains a developing agent, an alkali, a preservative, and a solvent. The developing agent, such as hydroquinone or metol, selectively reduces exposed silver halide crystals within the emulsion to metallic silver. These metallic silver particles form the dark areas of the final image. The alkali, often sodium carbonate, increases the pH of the solution, accelerating the action of the developing agent. The preservative, commonly sodium sulfite, prevents oxidation of the developing agent. The solvent, usually water, acts as the medium for all these components.

The effectiveness and outcome of the developing solution depend on several factors, including its composition, temperature, and the duration of immersion. Different developing solutions are formulated to achieve specific results, such as fine grain, high contrast, or archival permanence. The process is carefully controlled to ensure optimal image quality and to prevent over- or under-development. After development, the film or paper is typically rinsed and then fixed to make the image permanent and insensitive to further light exposure.
