Kauppanimellä betyder an, or in Finnish usage, the term refers to the name under which a business conducts its operations and presents itself to customers. It is the branding name used in marketing, invoices, contracts and public communications, and it may be the owner’s personal name or a separate registered name.

In Finland the concept is linked to the legal structure of the business. A trader can operate under a registered name either as a sole proprietor with a toiminimi (business name) or as a company with its own corporate name. The kauppanimellä is the public-facing identity of the business, while the underlying legal entity (natural person or registered company) remains the responsible party for liabilities and obligations.

Registration and availability are important. If the kauppanimellä differs from the owner’s personal name, it typically must be registered and must be available for use. In Finland, name availability and registration are handled through the authorities that maintain business and company registers, and the name should be traceable to a legal entity. To avoid confusion or conflicts, businesses often perform a name search before adopting a kauppanimellä.
