In a cathode ray tube, electrons are emitted from a heated filament (the cathode) and accelerated towards a positively charged anode. When these energetic electrons collide with the anode, which is typically made of a heavy metal like tungsten, their kinetic energy is rapidly converted into electromagnetic radiation. A significant portion of this radiation is in the form of X-rays, specifically Bremsstrahlung (braking radiation) and characteristic X-rays.

Bremsstrahlung occurs when the electrons are decelerated by the electric fields of the target material's atomic nuclei. The energy lost by the electrons is emitted as photons, with a continuous spectrum of energies up to the maximum kinetic energy of the incident electrons. Characteristic X-rays are produced when the incident electrons knock out inner-shell electrons from the target atoms. As outer-shell electrons fall to fill these vacancies, they emit photons with specific energies characteristic of the target material's atomic structure.
