The cation exchange capacity is influenced by several factors, including the number of charged sites on the material, the nature of the ions present in the solution, and the environmental conditions such as pH and temperature. Materials with a high cation exchange capacity are effective in applications like water softening, where calcium and magnesium ions are removed, or in chromatographic separations. In soil science, the CEC of soil is a critical indicator of its ability to retain essential nutrients, preventing them from leaching away.
