Katalánul is the Catalan language. It is a Romance language spoken primarily in Catalonia, a northeastern autonomous community of Spain. It is also spoken in the neighboring Balearic Islands, Andorra, and in the city of Alghero in Sardinia, Italy. Catalan is the official language of Andorra and is also recognized as a co-official language in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community. It belongs to the Western Romance branch of the Indo-European language family and is closely related to Occitan, another Romance language spoken in southern France.

The history of Catalan dates back to the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman province of Hispania. Over centuries, it evolved independently from other Romance languages, developing its own distinct characteristics. The medieval period saw a flourishing of Catalan literature, with poets and writers like Ramon Llull and Ausiàs March contributing significantly to its development. During the 19th and 20th centuries, there was a strong movement to standardize and promote the use of Catalan, often referred to as the Renaixença.

Today, Catalan is spoken by approximately 10 million people. It has a rich literary tradition and is used in education, media, and government in the regions where it is spoken. The language has a complex dialectal variation, with major dialectal groups including Northwestern Catalan and Eastern Catalan.
