Katalánul is the Catalan language. It is a Romance language spoken primarily in Catalonia, a northeastern autonomous community of Spain. It is also spoken in the neighboring Balearic Islands, Andorra, and in the city of Alghero in Sardinia, Italy. Catalan is the official language of Andorra and is also recognized as a co-official language in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community. It belongs to the Western Romance branch of the Indo-European language family and is closely related to Occitan, another Romance language spoken in southern France.
The history of Catalan dates back to the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman province of Hispania.
Today, Catalan is spoken by approximately 10 million people. It has a rich literary tradition and is
