It is smooth and glassy in appearance and is responsible for the smooth movement of joints. Elastic cartilage, found in the external ear and epiglottis, contains elastic fibers that provide additional flexibility. Fibrocartilage, found in the intervertebral discs and menisci, is the strongest type and contains a high concentration of collagen fibers.

The primary function of cartilage is to provide structural support and cushioning in the body. It acts as a shock absorber in joints, reducing friction and wear and tear. Additionally, cartilage plays a crucial role in the growth and development of bones, particularly during childhood. It also serves as a template for bone formation, a process known as endochondral ossification.

Cartilage has a limited ability to repair itself, especially in older adults. Injuries to cartilage, such as those caused by trauma or degenerative diseases, can lead to chronic pain and impaired mobility. Various treatments, including surgical interventions and regenerative therapies, are being explored to address these issues and improve the quality of life for individuals with cartilage-related conditions.
