The term covers metal carbides such as tungsten carbide (WC), titanium carbide (TiC), and tantalum carbide (TaC), as well as covalent ceramic carbides like silicon carbide (SiC) and boron carbide (B4C).

Key properties of carbide materials include exceptional hardness, high melting points, and strong chemical stability. Tungsten carbide is among the hardest known materials and maintains strength at elevated temperatures. Silicon carbide offers a balance of hardness, thermal conductivity, and electrical characteristics suitable for electronics. Boron carbide is very hard and lightweight, widely used in armor and abrasives. Many metal carbides form cemented composites with binders (for example WC with cobalt), yielding very high wear resistance.

Manufacturing methods vary by subtype. Cemented carbides are produced by powder metallurgy: carbide powders are mixed with a metallic binder and sintered to form dense inserts and tools. Pure ceramic carbides like SiC and TiC can be produced by sintering, hot pressing, or chemical vapor deposition for coatings and substrates. Some carbide materials are formed or coated using chemical or physical vapor deposition to tailor surface properties.

Applications of karbidmaterial span cutting tools, wear parts, and mining or drilling components due to hardness and wear resistance. Boron carbide is used in body armor and abrasive components, while silicon carbide serves as a substrate and dielectric material in power electronics and LEDs. Limitations include brittleness and processing costs, which influence material selection for specific applications.
