Karbanioner are organic compounds that contain a negatively charged carbon atom. This negative charge is typically localized on a carbon atom that is bonded to a less electronegative atom, such as a metal, or is stabilized by adjacent electron-withdrawing groups. The negative charge on the carbon atom makes it a strong nucleophile, meaning it is attracted to positively charged or electron-deficient species.

The stability of a karbanion is influenced by several factors. Resonance stabilization is a key factor; if the negative charge can be delocalized over multiple atoms through pi bonds, the karbanion becomes more stable.
