Karabineja is the Estonian term for carbines, a class of small, lightweight rifles designed for greater portability and maneuverability compared with longer service rifles. Carbines typically have shorter barrels and stocks, which reduces overall weight and length and makes them easier to handle in confined spaces, on horseback, or in urban or battlefield environments. They are chambered for a variety of cartridges, depending on the era and the user’s needs, ranging from pistol calibers to full-size rifle rounds.

Historically, carbines emerged to equip cavalry, support troops, and other personnel who required a more compact firearm. Over time, they evolved from muzzle-loading models to breech-loading, and then to breech-seated and semi-automatic or select-fire designs. In the 20th and 21st centuries, carbines such as the M1 Carbine and the M4 Carbine became widely used by military and law enforcement organizations, valued for portability, controllability, and adequate firepower in close-quarters combat.
