The most common site for collecting a capillary sample from adults is the fingertip, while infants often have blood drawn from their heel. The skin is first pricked with a lancet, and the resulting drop of blood is then collected into the capillary tube. This procedure is generally quick and less invasive than venipuncture, which involves drawing blood from a vein.

Capillary blood samples are suitable for a variety of tests, including blood glucose monitoring, hemoglobin analysis, and certain point-of-care diagnostic tests. The small volume required makes it an ideal method for frequent testing or for patients with limited venous access. However, it's important to note that capillary blood composition can differ slightly from venous blood, particularly in terms of electrolytes and proteins, and factors like excessive squeezing can affect the sample's accuracy.
