Unlike piston-style cylinders, which rely on a rigid piston and seals, kalvosylinterit employ a rubber or fabric-reinforced diaphragm that is alternately pressurized and vented. This diaphragm is typically attached to a rod or shaft.

The fundamental principle of operation involves directing compressed air to one side of the diaphragm. As the air pressure increases, it causes the diaphragm to flex and move, pushing the attached rod forward or backward depending on the configuration. When the air pressure is released, a spring or the inherent elasticity of the diaphragm returns the rod to its original position.
