Kaltsifikatsioone, also known as calcifications, are deposits of calcium salts that can form in various soft tissues of the body. These deposits are typically visible on imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. While often asymptomatic, calcifications can sometimes be associated with underlying medical conditions or may cause symptoms depending on their location and size.

The formation of calcifications, a process called calcification, can occur for several reasons. It can be a normal physiological process, such as in bone formation, or it can be a pathological response to injury, inflammation, infection, or abnormal metabolic conditions. For instance, calcifications can be found in arteries, contributing to atherosclerosis and increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. They can also appear in joints, leading to conditions like calcific tendinitis, or in organs like the kidneys, forming kidney stones. Breast calcifications are common and are often detected during mammography, with some types being benign and others potentially indicating malignancy.

Diagnosis of calcifications is usually made through imaging. The specific type and pattern of calcification can sometimes provide clues to its cause. Treatment, if necessary, depends on the underlying reason for the calcification and any associated symptoms. In many cases, calcifications are incidental findings and do not require specific treatment. However, if they contribute to significant symptoms or are associated with a serious disease, medical intervention may be warranted to manage the condition.
