Kaitseüksus is the Estonian term for a defense unit. The word kaitse means defense and üksus means unit. In Estonian defense discourse the term functions as a generic label for a military or paramilitary formation organized to protect the state and its population. It is not a single organization but a category that can apply to different kinds of units.

Practically, kaitseüksus may refer to units within the Estonian Defence Forces (Kaitsevägi) or to formations within the volunteer Estonian Defence League (Kaitseliit) or to locally organized groups prepared for mobilization. They can be permanent units or temporary units established for a particular operation, and they exist at various sizes and scopes depending on the mission.

Roles commonly include national defense readiness, border and coastal security support, disaster response, and assistance to civil authorities during emergencies. Training for kaitseüksus members typically covers basic military skills, communication, logistics, and civil defense tasks. Members are often part-time reservists who balance civilian life with service through national defense structures and local units; equipment and armament generally align with the broader Estonian armed forces and may be provided for specific missions. Estonia joined NATO in 2004, which further shaped defense planning and interoperability with allied forces.

Historically, Estonia has relied on a citizen-soldier model, with both permanent forces and reserve units playing a key role. After regaining independence in 1991, the defense system was reorganized to integrate civil defense and volunteer units into a cohesive national defense framework, a process that continues to evolve with security needs and modernization efforts to maintain interoperability with international partners.
