Kaitseadmed, the Estonian term for protective equipment, are devices and gear designed to reduce the risk of injury or harm in a range of activities. In Estonian usage, the term covers both personal protective equipment used at work and safety devices deployed in homes, vehicles and public spaces. The variant kaitseaadmed is also encountered in some texts.

Common categories include PPE such as helmets, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators, gloves, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and fall-protection systems. Other kaitseadmed encompass safety devices and alarms, fire detection systems, gas detectors and emergency shut-offs, as well as protective barriers and guards.

Regulatory framework: In the European Union, kaitseadmed are regulated under the PPE Regulation 2016/425. Manufacturers must perform conformity assessment, affix CE marking and provide a declaration of conformity and user instructions. Employers must conduct hazard assessments, supply suitable PPE, ensure correct use and fit, provide training, and maintain equipment. In Estonia, national authorities enforce these rules through the Work Environment Act and related supervision.

Standards and maintenance: PPE and safety devices are tested to harmonised standards such as EN 149, EN 166, EN 388 and EN 374, depending on the hazard. Selection should consider risks, fit and comfort. Maintenance requires regular inspection, cleaning and replacement when damaged or expired; proper storage and documentation support compliance.
