Külmkäivitusel refers to the process of starting an engine when it is cold. This means the engine has not been recently run and has cooled down to ambient temperature. During cold starts, several factors can make starting more difficult than when the engine is warm.

One of the primary challenges is the increased viscosity of engine oil. When cold, oil is thicker and does not flow as easily, which can impede lubrication to critical engine components during the initial cranking phase. This can lead to increased wear if the engine is run hard before the oil has warmed up and thinned sufficiently.

Another factor is fuel atomization. Cold fuel does not vaporize as readily as warm fuel, making it harder for the fuel-air mixture to ignite efficiently in the combustion chamber. Modern engines often compensate for this with enrichment systems, which temporarily increase the amount of fuel injected to ensure a combustible mixture.

The battery's performance also degrades in cold temperatures. Chemical reactions within the battery slow down, reducing its cranking power. This means the starter motor may turn the engine over more slowly during a cold start, further compounding the difficulty of achieving ignition.

Finally, condensation can form inside the engine and exhaust system when it cools down. This moisture can affect combustion and potentially lead to corrosion over time. Regular use of the vehicle, allowing the engine to reach operating temperature, helps to evaporate this condensation.
