Køestudier is an interdisciplinary academic field that examines how gender, sex and sexuality influence social life, institutions, and culture. It analyzes how identities are constructed, performed, and regulated in areas such as family, education, work, media, and law. The field draws on feminist theory, queer theory, and intersectionality, and uses both qualitative and quantitative methods.

Historically, køestudier grew out of feminist scholarship and sociological and literary analysis, with later contributions from gender and queer theory. In Danish and Scandinavian contexts it engages with national policy and welfare systems while connecting to international debates about gender equality, rights, and representation.

Common topics include gender socialization, representation in media, labor and care work, sexuality and rights, masculine and feminine norms, and the intersection of gender with race, class, ethnicity, disability, and sexuality. Methods include interviews, ethnography, discourse analysis, content analysis, and archival research.

Key debates concern the distinction between sex and gender, essentialism versus constructionism, and how to address power and inequality. Ethical considerations involve informed consent, confidentiality, and the protection of marginalized groups. The field also emphasizes context-specific analysis and avoids universalizing claims.

Køestudier is taught at universities and research institutes and informs policy, education, media critique, and social work. Graduates work in academia, NGOs, government agencies, journalism, and cultural institutions.
