Kõvadusteste, or hardness testing, is a method used to determine the resistance of a material to localized plastic deformation. This deformation is typically caused by indentation or abrasion. Hardness is a fundamental material property that often correlates with other important characteristics such as strength, wear resistance, and ductility. There are several common types of hardness tests, each with its own methodology and applicability. The Brinell hardness test uses a hardened steel ball of a specific diameter pressed into the material surface with a known load. The resulting indentation's diameter is then measured. The Rockwell hardness test employs a diamond cone or steel ball indenter under two different loads, a preliminary minor load and a major load. The depth of penetration is measured after the major load is removed. Vickers hardness testing uses a diamond pyramid indenter and measures the size of the indentation. This method is suitable for a wide range of materials, including thin sheets and surface layers. Knoop hardness testing also uses a diamond indenter but with a rhombic-shaped base, making it ideal for testing brittle materials and thin layers due to its shallower indentation. Shore hardness is commonly used for polymers and elastomers and involves pressing a pointed or rounded indenter into the material.

The choice of hardness test depends on the material being tested, the required accuracy, and the intended application. Each test provides a hardness value that can be used to compare different materials or to assess the consistency of a particular material.
