Käyttötilit, meaning "user accounts" in Finnish, are fundamental to how modern computing systems manage access and resources. A user account is an identifier that allows an individual or a process to log into a system. Each account is typically associated with a unique username and a password or other authentication methods. This allows the system to distinguish between different users and enforce security policies.

When a user logs in with their account, the system can grant them specific permissions and access levels. These permissions determine what files they can read, write, or delete, and which applications they can run. This principle of least privilege ensures that users only have the necessary access to perform their tasks, minimizing the risk of accidental or malicious data modification or system compromise.

User accounts also facilitate resource management. Operating systems track resource usage, such as CPU time, memory, and disk space, on a per-account basis. This can be useful for billing, performance monitoring, and setting usage quotas. Different types of user accounts exist, including standard user accounts with limited privileges and administrator accounts with full control over the system. System services and background processes also often run under dedicated service accounts, which are designed for specific operational tasks rather than interactive user sessions.
