Jéghullás, also known as ice fall or ice shed, refers to the phenomenon where accumulated ice detaches from structures, natural formations, or vegetation and falls to the ground. This often occurs during periods of temperature fluctuation, particularly when temperatures rise above freezing after a prolonged cold spell. The thawing process loosens the ice's grip, leading to its descent.

The size and impact of jéghullás can vary significantly. Small icicles falling from eaves or tree branches are common and generally pose little threat. However, larger ice formations, such as those on bridges, power lines, or significant overhangs, can present a considerable hazard. The falling ice can cause damage to property, vehicles, and, in severe cases, can injure pedestrians or workers below.

Identifying areas prone to jéghullás is important for safety. Structures with exposed horizontal surfaces that collect snow and ice, such as roofs, balconies, and the undersides of bridges, are particularly susceptible. Natural formations like cliffs or steep, icy slopes can also experience jéghullás. Preventive measures often include de-icing systems, proper building insulation to reduce ice dam formation, and public awareness campaigns to warn people of the potential dangers during thaws. In areas where jéghullás is a frequent occurrence, warning signs may be posted to indicate hazardous zones.
