Jätteenpolttamo, also known as a waste incineration plant or waste-to-energy facility, is an industrial plant where waste is burned at high temperatures. The primary purpose of incineration is to reduce the volume of waste, making it easier and more cost-effective to manage. Additionally, the heat generated by the combustion process can be harnessed to produce electricity or heat for district heating systems, a concept known as waste-to-energy.

The process typically involves several stages. Waste is first delivered to the plant and stored in a bunker. From there, it is fed into a furnace or incinerator where it is combusted. The combustion process releases flue gases, which are then treated to remove pollutants such as particulate matter, acid gases, and heavy metals before being released into the atmosphere. Jätteenpolttamo facilities play a role in integrated waste management strategies, often used in conjunction with recycling and landfilling. While they significantly reduce waste volume and can recover energy, concerns exist regarding air emissions, ash disposal, and the potential disincentive to reduce waste generation at the source. Modern plants are equipped with advanced emission control technologies to minimize their environmental impact. The ash produced, both bottom ash and fly ash, requires careful management and can sometimes be used in construction materials after appropriate treatment.
