Its main purpose is to collect and partially treat domestic wastewater from properties such as houses, cabins, or commercial establishments.

The typical jätevesisäiliö is an underground container, usually made of concrete, plastic, or fiberglass. It functions by allowing solid waste to settle to the bottom as sludge, while lighter materials like grease and oil float to the surface as scum. The liquid wastewater, known as effluent, then passes through the tank. In simpler systems, this effluent is then discharged into a soil absorption field or a leaching bed, where further biological treatment occurs naturally.
